Mentors are the backbone of every successful FIRST® team. They’re the ones guiding students through design reviews, debugging code late into the night, cheering at competitions, and making sure student voices are heard.
Supporting mentors isn’t just important—it’s essential to the long-term success of every team.
That’s why the FIRST Wisconsin Engagement Committee, in partnership with FIRST Alumni of Madison, are excited to host a FIRST Mentor Development Initiative (MDI) – Midwest Workshop, a one-day event designed to bring mentors together from across the region to connect, collaborate, and create a roadmap for stronger mentor support.

The History of MDI
In 2023, FIRST HQ launched the Mentor Development Initiative (MDI)—a multi-year effort to recruit, train, and retain mentors through new resources, training opportunities, and recognition. The Midwest Workshop brings that national vision to life at the regional level, ensuring Midwest mentors have a voice in shaping the tools and supports they need most.
What to Expect
At this workshop, mentors—whether new to FIRST or seasoned veterans—will:
Learn about the FIRST Mentor Development Initiative and what’s coming next.
Provide feedback on regional mentor needs in connectivity, recognition, and training.
Collaborate in small-group brainstorms to identify challenges and opportunities unique to Midwest teams.
Engage in breakout workshops by area of expertise, sharing best practices and defining training needs.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just another meeting—it’s an opportunity to shape how mentors are supported across the Midwest. Together, we’ll strengthen mentor networks, build sustainable support systems, and lay the foundation for future gatherings like a multi-day FIRST Midwest Mentor Conference.
